ANGE D’OR‘s and DRAGONEs – ST MICHAEL slaying the DRAGON –

The image of Saint Michael slaying the dragon has a significant association with French royalty, primarily through the Order of Saint Michael, an elite order of chivalry.

The Order of Saint Michael

  • Foundation: King Louis XI of France established the Order on August 1, 1469.
  • Patron Saint: Louis XI placed the Order under the patronage of Saint Michael
  • Insignia: Members of the Order wore a prominent gold collar with an attached badge depicting the Archangel Michael slaying the dragon. This specific imagery marked the wearer as a loyal servant of the French king.

DRAGONE is an anagram of ANGE D’OR

The anagrammatic coding is reminiscent of a famous Leonardo da Vinci drawing depicting a lion fighting a dragon.

The AVIGNON PAPACY

The Avignon Papacy was the period from 1309 to 1377 during which seven successive popes resided in Avignon (modern-day France) rather than Rome.

(N.B. The first ANGE D’OR gold coins were issued in 1341-1342 by King Philip VI of France).

The Seven Avignon Popes (1305–1378)

All seven popes during this period were French, and they significantly expanded the French presence within the College of Cardinals.

  • Clement V (1305–1314): Relocated the papacy and, under King Philip’s pressure, suppressed the Knights Templar.
  • John XXII (1316–1334): A gifted administrator who centralized church finances and bureaucracy but lived a lavish, “princely” lifestyle.
  • Benedict XII (1334–1342): A reformer who began construction of the massive Palais des Papes.
  • Clement VI (1342–1352): Formally purchased Avignon in 1348 and oversaw the papacy during the height of the Black Death.
  • Innocent VI (1352–1362): Continued administrative reforms and sought to restore order in the Papal States in Italy.
  • Urban V (1362–1370): Known for his simple lifestyle; he attempted a brief return to Rome from 1367 to 1370 but was forced back to Avignon by unrest.
  • Gregory XI (1370–1378): Finally returned the papacy to Rome permanently in January 1377, influenced significantly by the pleas of St. Catherine of Siena

Châteauneuf-du-Pape – built in the 14th century for Pope John XXII, the second of the popes to reside in Avignon.

The Loudun possessions were a notorious 17th-century French witchcraft trial involving mass hysteria, the alleged demonic possession of an entire convent of Ursuline nuns, and the subsequent execution of a local priest, Urbain Grandier.
In 1634, in the town of Loudun, a group of nuns claimed to be possessed by demons. Urbain Grandier, a charismatic and well-educated priest was accused of summoning the evil spirits through a pact with Satan. The accusations, led to a public and highly publicized trial that culminated in Grandier being found guilty of sorcery and witchcraft. He was tortured and ultimately burned at the stake.
The events have been extensively documented and fictionalised in various works, including the famous book The Devils of Loudun by Aldous Huxley.

Urbain Grandier’s infamous pact with the Devil:

A physical document, signed by Grandier and several demons, was presented as key evidence during his trial.

  • Format: The document was written in Latin using mirror-writing (backwards), requiring a mirror to be read.
  • Signatories: It bore the signatures and sigils (symbols) of high-ranking demons, including Lucifer, Satan, Beelzebub, Leviathan, Elimi, and Astaroth.
  • Witness: The demon Baalberith was listed as the official recorder or writer (scriptor) of the pact.
  • Terms: In exchange for his soul after 20 years, the demons promised Grandier “the love of women, the flower of virgins, the respect of monarchs, honours, lusts and powers”.
  • Requirements: Grandier supposedly agreed to trample holy relics and offer a seal of blood once a year.

Second part of the pact allegedly signed between Urbain Grandier and the Devil from the Dictionnaire infernal ou Bibliothèque universelle… by Collin de Plancy (1826)
