King George VI declares war on Germany—two days after the German invasion of Poland.
14th October 1939:
The sinking of HMS Royal Oak by German U-Boat U-47 was a major shock for the Royal Navy.
In total 834 personnel were killed as a result of the successful torpedo strikes by the German submarine.
